Hints and Problems Only the owner of the disk (licence) may use Lazy. 'Lending' the disk to others, or copying it is a breach of copyright. If the original disk is damaged, please return it for replacement. However, the demo version may be freely copied and distributed (but not changed). Changing any of the code or resources is a breach of copyright, and may damage the program. Periodically you will be prompted to reload the program from the original disk. Lazy runs in the background under system 6 multifinder and system 7. This means that you can switch to another Macintosh application while waiting for Lazy to finish. If you are running under multifinder or system 7 you may need to increase the memory (heap) size for large problems. Select Lazy and 'get info' from the finder. If the Lazy icons are not correctly drawn, rebuild your desktop directory by holding down the Option and Command keys while re-starting your Macintosh. Optimise Lazy for your own use by dragging and resizing the various windows according to the size of your monitor, and then choose Save Settings from the file menu. Customise Lazy by editing Lazy.diffractometers and Lazy.structures to record your favourite diffractometers and structures, which will then be accessible in the data window. Save copies of these files, since they will be overwritten if ever you need to reload Lazy from the original disk. The lazy.data window can be used to open, view and edit any text file. Use it to check the results file 'Lazy.results', especially if there is a problem. Similarly, the Plot window can be used to open any pict file, especially plots produced and saved with Lazy. Simple editing (copy, paste and resizing of different plots) is possible. If the printed text is not sharp, you may be using a font that is not installed in your system. The default font is Helvitica, available on all laserwriters. For serious editing of the pict files, use a professional drawing program such as MacDraw or Canvas. Or use DrawOver to convert to postscript and then edit with Adobe Illustrator. Lazy.data files are automatically saved before preparing or calculating data. Be sure to Save AsÉ a different name if you do not want to overwrite a file of the same name. The CELL and ATOM lines may be in free format, unit occupancy and B-factor is assumed if they are not given, & fractional co-ordinates such as 1/3+x (without spaces) may be used. Only the spacegroup settings listed are permitted on the SPCGRP line, and where there is a choice, the origin is always at the centre of symmetry. Otherwise use SYMTRY lines. The CONDIT line overides the selection of the diffractometer geometry and wavelength in the 'crystal data' dialogue. Leave it out to obtain greater freedom in changing these. Lazy may be used to plot observed and calculated profiles from a Rietveld program, with differences and peak labels, if a text file is produced similar to the xxx.prof files of Lazy. Remember that the plots are in colour; you won't see this on a black and white Macintosh, but when printing, colours may be 'simulated' on a black and white printer by dotted or patterned lines. Explicitly choose 'black and white' in the laserwriter v7.0 printer dialogue. Force programs such as PageMaker to use the Apple laserwriter driver (v7.0) by holding down the 'option' key while selecting 'print' so that colours are converted to black and white. When pasting plots to MS Word, add a 'carriage return' or you may not see the re-sizing handle. Resolution may be lost on re-sizing. These are bugs in MS Word. Alan Hewat would be grateful for all suggestions, comments, files of structures etc. A high priority is to add a STRUPLO-type structure drawing option to Lazy. A.W.
