A note about HMSA profiles

The example files on this page are provided in three 'profiles':

  • Typical, which contain a single dataset per file, with the usual range of experimental conditions and header information. These files represent the typical type of HMSA/XML files that a user may expect to encounter.
  • Baseline, which contain a single dataset per file, with no experimental conditions and header information. These files represent the bare minimum required to load a binary HMSA dataset.
  • Extended, which contain multiple datasets per file, with a fulsome range of experimental conditions and header information.

Implementers should aim to support the typical and baseline profiles. Support for files in the extended profile is optional, but as a fallback, these files should be supported in the same manner as the typical profile by ignoring all datasets after the first.

Examples

Breccia

This is a 158×90px sub-region of a larger EPMA map of a specimen from a breccia deposit in Queensland, Australia. The original map data includes a hyperspectral EDS map, five WDS map layers, a backscattered electron map, seven EDS region of interest maps, and one EDS sum spectrum.

Murray Basin Ilmenite

This is a 94×120px sub-region of a larger EPMA map of a specimen of ilmenite concentrate from the Murray Basin region of Southeast Australia. The original map data includes two hyperspectral maps (EDS and CL), five WDS map layers, a backscattered electron map, one panchromatic CL map, and six EDS region of interest maps.

Shale

This is a 251×251px sub-region of a larger EPMA map of a specimen of quartz shale. The original map data includes two hyperspectral maps (EDS and CL), five WDS map layers, a backscattered electron map, one panchromatic CL map, and six EDS region of interest maps. Additionally, this dataset includes measurements of standard materials for quantitification of phases in the EDS spectral map (5 WDS peak+background measurements, 6 EDS spectra), along with the required measurement conditions for quantification, such as acquisition times, standard compositions, probe conditions, etc.
