EMMPDL The Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis Public Domain Library Nestor J. Zaluzec Electron Microscopy Center for Materials Research Materials Science Division / Building 212 Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Illinois 60439 U.S.A. As the various personal computers become more and more prolific it becomes inevitable that certain useful programs and/or generic subroutines are rewritten or redeveloped a great number of times for a range of different languages and computers. Since not everyone enjoys reinventing the wheel, it is obvious that a mechanism of open communication for microanalysis based software code is needed. Most microscopists/microanalysts are more than willing to share this information with the general community if there was a reasonable means to distribute the it without severely impacting on their own time and/or resources. To this end a Public Domain Software Library is being jointly established by the Electron Microscopy Center at Argonne and the EMSA Bulletin. Its purpose is to provide a common forum for the exchange of data, source codes, and other information concerning computer-based microanalysis. Access to this information will be completely free of charge and users having PC's, Micro, Mini, or Mainframe computer systems will be able to access the data base for their research using conventional telecommunications protocols as outlined below.
