Since not everyone enjoys reinventing the wheel, it is obvious that a mechanism of open communication for microanalysis based software code is needed. Most microscopists/microanalysts are more than willing to share this information with the general community if there was a reasonable means to distribute the it without severely impacting on their own time and/or resources. To this end the Microscopy and Microanalysis Software Library (MMSLib) has been formed. This library is a merger of the MSA/Argonne Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis Public Domain Library (EMMPDL) and The MAS Microbeam Analysis Society Software Library (MASSL). Its purpose is to provide a common forum for the exchange of data, source codes, and other information concerning computer-based microanalysis. The libraries are stored in three locations: Unix fileservers at the Microscopy Society of America Site (MSA.MICROSCOPY.COM), Argonne National Laboratory (WWW.AMC.ANL.GOV) and at The University of Michigan College of Engineering (FREEBIE.ENGIN.UMICH.EDU) . Access to this information will be completely free of charge and users having PC's, Micro, Mini, or Mainframe computer systems will be able to access the data base for their research using conventional telecommunications protocols or via the Internet as outlined below.
