Cass Avenue Argonne, Illinois, USA 60439 Telephone: (312) 972-5075 Email Address: Zaluzec@aaem.msd.anl.gov As the various personal computers become more and more prolific it becomes inevitable that certain useful programs and/or generic subroutines are rewritten or redeveloped a great number of times for a range of different languages and computers. Since not everyone enjoys reinventing the wheel, it is obvious that a mechanism of open communication for microanalysis based software code is needed. Most microscopists/microanalysts are more than willing to share this information with the general community if there was a reasonable means to distribute the it without severely impacting on their own time and/or resources. To this end the Microscopy and Microanalysis Software Library (MMSLib) is being formed. This library is a merger of the MSA/Argonne Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis Public Domain Library (EMMPDL) and The MAS Microbeam Analysis Society Software Library (MASSL). Its purpose is to provide a common forum for the exchange of data, source codes, and other information concerning computer-based microanalysis. The libraries are stored in two locations: a Unix fileserver at Argonne National Laboratory and a Unix fileserver at The University of Michigan College of Engineering. Access to this information will be completely free of charge and users having PC's, Micro, Mini, or Mainframe computer systems will be able to access the data base for their research using conventional telecommunications protocols or via the Internet as outlined below.
