Specifically they are: 1. Actively encourage and promote the free exchange and discussion of information, ideas and opinions, except when the content would compromise the national security of the United States; violate proprietary rights, personal privacy, or applicable state/federal/local laws and regulations affecting telecommunications; or constitute a crime or libel. 2. Use your REAL NAME and fully disclose any personal, financial, or commercial interest when evaluation any specific product or service. 3. Adhere to these rules and notify the SYSOP immediately when you discover any violations of the rules. FURTHER every user explicitly acknowledges that all information obtained from the EMC/MSA/MAS BBS is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied, including, but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose and that the entire risk of acting on information obtained from this BBS, including the entire costs of all necessary remedies, is with those who choose to act on such information and not the operators of this BBS. The daily limit for general users to this BBS is 30 minutes/day using either the commerical phone line (708)-252-7917 or the new Internet link. ----- Special Note for MSA Members ------ As many of you know MSA sponsors an 800 number service for it's members The MSA policy is to grant each general user 30 minutes/MONTH of 800 number (i.e toll free) phone calls to this BBS. If the 800 number system is abused, then it is possible that MSA reserves the right to withdraw sponsorship of the system and the toll-free number, so please be conscientious. Any time used over the 30 minutes/month should be made using your own telephone system by calling this BBS using our commerical number which is: 708-252-7917 or using Internet. ----- Special Note for MAS Members ----- At the last Council meeting of MAS, it was decided that MAS would no longer support 800 number access to this BBS system other expenses associated with operation of the BBS will continue to be shared. All MAS members should login using the commerical phone lines or using Internet. June 1993 --- Nestor BBS Instructions ====================================================== Okay, Now that I'm here what do I do first????? ====================================================== Most people will just dive into the BBS and explore the menu system to see what the options are. I've set up a on-line help system which is fairly self-explainatory so if you get stuck type a ? for help at the menu prompt. If you would like some suggestions read on. Otherwise select [S]TOP and explore on your own. This is not a manual as it is not yet written, but it will get done in the near (arbitrary time) future. The first logical step is to get familiar with the BBS menus. First, exit the Bulletin Menu System by following the instructions at the end of this message. You will now be left in the MAIN MENU, which list options and their access letters, for example, [A] to select an AREA Conference or for help. At the bottom of the screen is the system prompt which will say: MAIN MENU: SELECT OPTION=>:[A ? M P B.....]? The BBS is waiting for you to enter a single letter command which tells it to perform some operation. The menu defines what the individual letters correspond to at this level. To activate a function just type the corresponding letter and answer any remaining questions. Why not begin by checking your SETTINGS? Choose the "S" option, by typing an "S" and then either the ENTER or RETURN key on your computer. You will be presented with a concise table of 16 items, which is set up for your personel account. Check each option to see if it corresponds to what you prefer, many of these answers are the result of your responses to the initial questionaire you filled out when you first logged on to this system. If you wish to change an item just type it's number and at the bottom of your screen you will get a prompt which allows you to type new values. If your not sure of what an item is try typing an [H]for HELP the online help system should provide you with enough information to make a decision. To exit the SETTINGS just type a ENTER and you will return to the MAIN MENU. Next try to READ a message in the general discussion area of the BBS. Take your time here and read each line of text on the screen, you will notice that the system is significantly different than the previous BBS. You begin by first selecting the AREA of the BBS you wish to be in. The first time you login to the BBS you are placed in AREA-[0] which is the PUBLIC MESSAGE/DISCUSSION area. Notice at the bottom of the menu you will see listed which AREA of the BBS you are currently participating. You should see: YOU ARE IN AREA/CONF: "[0]-Public Message/Discussion", Time left = ?? Min at the bottom of your screen. This tells you which AREA you are in and how much time you have left in this session on the BBS before you are automatically logged off. By design, each general user is allowed a maximum of 30 minutes/day. Special cases requiring more time exist, such as system operations but for the present that is beyond our discussion at this point. To select or change an AREA type "A". You will be then asked to enter the area number which you want to join. If you do not know which area you want to join you may get a listing at the AREA prompt by typing an "L". Here you will get a listing of all the conference AREA's which you have the permission to join. The BBS is divided into logical areas which correspond to: Society information, Local Society information, and General Discussion Topics or Zones. These have all been set up previously in the old system and still roughly correspond in this reincarnation. A new change in this system relative to the old BBS software, is that all files are now directly accessible from the conference AREAS rather than through a seperate filing system. Thus to find files associated with, for example, the Philadelphia Society of EM, you must enter the discussion AREA for that LAS. Another important point is that, although you may have the permission to join a conference area this does not mean you have authorization to view all files in that area, or to upload/download files into that area. These options depend on your access level which the SYSOP assigns to your account. At the present time the following levels are defined: NEWuser ------ This user has limited access until verified as a valid user/member of one of the societies A NEWUSER only has access to AREA-0 the general discussion area and cannot download or upload files until upgraded to a FULLuser by the SYSOP. This is a security issue, to insure that random login's by individuals to this BBS do not abuse our system and run up phone bills or lock up the computer/phone lines. NEWUSERS should send a COMMENT to the SYSOP to acknowledge their login to this BBS and request upgrade to FULLUSER status. FULLuser ----- This user is a member of one of the societies and has access to most of the BBS. Most AREA's (but not all) are accessible and this user can download most files. Uploads are limited to a single area and are NOT available to the general public until they have been verified by the SYSOP. LAS---------- This user is a recognized LAS representative having all access privileges of the FULLUSER plus can upload information into LAS areas for access by FULLUSERS COUNCIL------ A member of Council of one of the societies. This user has all privileges of the LAS user, plus can upload/download to restricted areas which are not intented for public information, but for society administrative functions. SYSOP -- System Operator (i.e. God) the Supreme Being who is perfect in power, wisdom, and goodness and who all users acknowledge as creator and ruler of this electronic universe, (until such a time as Council pulls the plug on the monies need to pay the bills, especially the phone, after which time he returns to mere superhuman status). COSYSOP -- God's designated helper All other users will see anywhere from 1 to over 150 areas listed depending upon their access level. Now begin to explore the system options. In contrast to the OLD BBS software Email and messages are all entered using the same menu of the BBS. AN IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE IN THIS SOFTWARE IS IN POSTING PRIVATE EMAIL MESSAGES TO INDIVIDUALS, you must enter conference AREA #2 (Private Email) for this operation. All other messages are treated as public even though they are addressed to an individual and are therefore, accessible by all users of this system. --- Nestor P.S. Please remember the MSA/MAS BBS policy is to grant each user 30 minutes of 800 number (i.e toll free) phone calls to this BBS per MONTH. This BBS operates on an HONOR system as I do not have time to completely police each phone call, as the system has been averaging about 10-15 calls/day at all hours of the day and night. However, the system is monitored and questionable usage is obvious and will be investigated as appropriate. If the system is abused, then it is possible that MSA may withdraw sponsor ship of the system and the toll-free number, so please be conscientious. If you have used up your 800-time in a month, remember you may always call commerically the number is 708-252-7917. Using the commerical number you may call as many times as you wish per month up to the daily limit of 30min/day. Access to the EMC/MSA/MAS BBS Using Internet A new access link has been established for the microscopy and microanalysis electronic bulletin board system using INTERNET. Internet is one of the largest worldwide networks which allows computers on the network to communicate using a protocol call TCP/IP. Most people currently associate Internet with electronic mail (SMTP), however, it (TCP/IP) also supports a set of powerful file transfer protocols (FTP) as well as a telecommunications protocol (TELNET). If your site supports the full TCP/IP protocol then you should have access to TELNET. Using TELNET you may establish an INTERACTIVE communications link between your local computer and this BBS system. This provides a low cost (i.e. no phone charge) link to the BBS. To establish the link invoke TELNET on your host computer system. Contact your local System Operator to determine how to access TELNET on -Pause- [C]ontinue, [N]onStop, [S]top? [C]Nyour local system. After you invoke TELNET (i.e. run the program), the you should request a connection to the node "ANLEMC.MSD.ANL.GOV". Again see your local computer guru to find out how to do this. Once the link is established and you are connected then you will see an announcement that you have connected to the ANLEMC VAX computer system (an example of the login screen is shown below). You must next login to the VAX using the account established for the EMC/MSA/MAS BBS. You should login using the Username/Password combination of "EMCBBS" as illustrated below: ******************************************************************** Electron Microscopy Center VAX 11/785 System Username: EMCBBS Password: EMCBBS * lots of text follows here * ******************************************************************** Several announcements will appear on your screen as well as requests for information. Simply follow the instructions which appear on your terminal they should walk through the system interconnections. It is a complicated combination of hardware and software links which allow the different networks and serial devices to communicate with each other. The details of which are beyond this set of simple instructions. Please remember that the Internet link is still being actively debugged and some problems are to be expected so please help me sort these out. One problem which will undoubtably occur is due to the fact that there is only a single node (line) available for connection between the Internet and this BBS. It is possible therefore, that 2 people will try to access the BBS at the same time using the INTERNET link. At the present the link is established on a FIRST COME/FIRST SERVE basis and you will simply have to wait your turn. (Remember it costs money to upgrade services and we operate on a limited budget). If you have problems with the connection being "IN-USE" please try again later. Each connection has a maximum daily time limit of 30 minutes. So on average every 1/2 hour the line should become free for the next user to login. There are two objective in setting up the INTERNET link. 1.) It can save money! The biggest cost of yearly operation of this BBS is the telephone lines particuliarly the 800 number service. With an INTERNET link there are no phone costs since the phones are not used. Just for the record my research budget in the EMC at ANL pays for the INTERNET node (~$500/Month). 2.) It expands our user base to the entire microanalysis community worldwide. Although we have had users login to the BBS from oversea's the phone cost (which they paid) are very steep. Most international usage of the software libraries which the EMC operates are accessed using INTERNET and our electronic MAILSERVER system. The telecommunications line 800-627-EMSA ( 708-252-7917) will remain connected at all times and thus the BBS can have 2 users operating at any one time.
