EMMPDL The Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis Public Domain Library Nestor J. Zaluzec Materials Science Division / Building 212 Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Illinois 60439 U.S.A. As the various personal computers become more and more prolific it becomes inevitable that certain useful programs and/or generic subroutines are rewritten or redeveloped a great number of times for a range of different languages and computers. Since not everyone enjoys reinventing the wheel, it is obvious that a mechanism of open communication for microanalysis based software code is needed. Most microscopists/microanalysts are more than willing to share this information with the general community if there was a reasonable means to distribute the it without severely impacting on their own time and/or resources. To this end a Public Domain Software Library is being jointly established by the Argonne National Laboratory and the Microscopy Society of America. Its purpose is to provide a common forum for the exchange of data, source codes, and other information concerning computer-based microanalysis. Access to this information will be completely free of charge and users having PC's, Micro, Mini, or Mainframe computer systems will be able to access the data base for their research using conventional telecommunications protocols as outlined below. Telecommunications Protocol Starting Date : Now On-Line Communication Line : 1200-9600 Baud 8 data & 1 stop bit, no parity Modem Protocol : Any V.22,V.32,V.42 Modem Transfer Protocol : Downloading using XON/XOFF ASCII transfer handshaking or by error-checking using KERMIT. also links by Email/Bitnet/Internet Charges : None, except for your own phone bill. Lines/Times : Two Lines/24 Hours Per Day Phone Number : 708-252-7919 <--- 1200-9600 708-252-7918 <--- 1200-9600 or use Internet/Telnet to AAEM.AMC.ANL.GOV Login Sequence : Username = EMMPDL Password = EMMPDL Don't have access to a Modem at home? If you want to access the EMMPDL you may also use Email by using the EMMPDL MAILSERVER The files in the EMMPDL area that can be retrieved are executed using the Pascal Memo Distribuition Facility. PMDF is a general-purpose system for delivering computer based mail. This version of PMDF uses the standard VMS MAIL facility as its user interface. The PMDF is an efficient way to obtain the files from the AMC$DISK:[EMMPDL] area. The EMMPDL MAILSERV facility takes electronic mail messages sent to the EMMPDL area and interprets the body of the messages as commands. A SINGLE command has been implemented: namely "SEND filename", where filename is the complete name of the file which you wish to have automatically returned to you by Email. Three special files exist on the mail server and they should be requested first before attempting to "download" other files. they are: HELP.TXT <---- This file contains all the help information you need. DIRLIST.TXT <--- This file contains a current directory listing of all files ABSLIST.TXT <--- This file contains the current listing of all abstracts. After you have requested these files and read their contents then you may request copies of any other files on the system. How to use the EMMPDL file requestor: 1.) Enter your electronic mail system 2.) Enter the following electronic mail Address: "EMMPDL@AAEM.AMC.ANL.GOV" if you have INTERNET Note: Different Electronic Mail systems sometimes require BITNET addresses to be pre/post/embedded with special characters and/or keywords. Check with your system administrator to make sure you can access BITNET or INTERNET. 3.) In the body of your Email message type one of the following commands but omit the "" signs, the mailserver interprets these commands as indicated by the text following the arrows (<-----) "SEND HELP.TXT" <------- SENDS THIS FILE "SEND ABSLIST.TXT" <------- SENDS AN ABSTRACT LISTING "SEND DIRLIST.TXT" <------- SENDS A DIRECTORY LISTING "SEND [EMMPDL.SUBDIR]FILE.EXT" <------- SENDS A SPECIFIC FILE IN <------- THE SPECIFIED SUBDIRECTORY 4.) Using your local Electronic Mail System send your message. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Notes: You must be able to access BITNET/INTERNET via your Electronic mail system to use this facility. You should expect an automatic reply usually the next day, if after a few days you donot receive a reply please send an Email message to Nestor Zaluzec at the address Zaluzec@AAEM.AMC.ANL.GOV" or call (708)-252-4964. Here is an example of requesting the abslist file using a VAX EMAIL system, please remember that every mail system is slightly different but the general principles of how the procedure works is the same: MAIL>send To: EMMPDL@AAEM.AMC.ANL.GOV Subj: SEND ABSLIST.TXT Hit Ctrl-Z to send request; Ctrl-C to cancel request. *** Please Note: It does not matter what EMAIL system you are going to use, but always use the address of:EMMPDL@AAEM.AMC.ANL.GOV. In the body of the message, enter: SEND FILENAME to obtain that file. *** ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- If, after reviewing the DIRLIST and ABSLIST files, you would like to have individual files returned to you, simply request the file name from that directory. Here is an example of requesting an individual file using the VAX system:If you would like a file(s) from the AMC$DISK:[EMMPDL.CBED] area, enter the following: MAIL>send To: EMMPDL@AAEM.AMC.ANL.GOV Subj: (You don't have to enter anything here!) SEND [EMMPDL.CBED]DIFFRACTIONSUITE.ABS Hit Ctrl-Z to send request; Ctrl-C to cancel request. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ************** NOTE!!! ************** If you would like mulitple files returned to you, you may enter in up to four requests per message. Here is an example of requesting the maximum number of files using the VAX system: MAIL>send To: EMMPDL@AAEM.AMC.ANL.GOV Subj: (You don't have to enter anything here!) SEND ABSLIST.TXT SEND [.CBED]MOCBEDOFF.ABS;2 SEND [.XRD]LATTPARM.ABS;2 SEND [.XEDS]XENERGY.TOTAL;1 Hit Ctrl-Z to send request; Ctrl-C to cancel request. As you can see there are nine files requested. PMDF will return an error message to you if any more files are requested. If you have any questions/comments about obtaining files from the EMMPDL area, contact Nestor Zaluzec at: ZALUZEC@AAEM.AMC.ANL.GOV.
